Care & Repair Edinburgh: Chair of the Board
Purpose
- To be an effective leader, ensuring effective governance and support to the Trustees and Director of Care and Repair Edinburgh, (CRE).
- To act as a Trustee and Non-Executive Director of Care & Repair
Chair Responsibilities
- Chair meetings of the Board ensuring effective decision making and adherence to the governance standards required.
- Lead the Board in timely approval of organisational strategy and budgets.
- Line management of the CRE Director to ensure effective performance and oversight of the strategic management of CRE.
- Model and lead the management and development of the Board to ensure that they maintain capacity to govern and create an ethos of self-reflection and accountability.
- Ensure that the Board effectively reviews the Risk Register and ensure due diligence in relation to the risks and opportunities identified.
- Ensure that the Board fulfils its duties to ensure the sound financial health and sustainability of CRE.
- Act as a spokesperson and ambassador for CRE.
General Trustee responsibilities
- To ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
- To contribute actively to the work of Care & Repair Edinburgh. In particular Trustees are responsible for shaping and endorsing the strategic direction, setting overall policy, evaluating organisational performance and supporting the staff team to achieve their agreed goals and objectives.

- To ensure that Care & Repair Edinburgh takes steps to protect and manage the property of the charity including proper investment of charity funds.
It is anticipated that the duties of the Chair of Trustees are likely to take about 3 days a month and applicants must be able to accommodate this. The Board currently meets 4 times a year, February, May, August and November, in Edinburgh.
These posts are not remunerated but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
Trustees should not have any significant interest in any organisation that conflicts directly with the goals of Care & Repair Edinburgh and all potential conflicts of interest should be declared, including at each Board meeting.

Qualities, skills and experience
We are seeking a Chair with the following:
- Able to demonstrate a commitment our vision statement: Care and Repair Edinburgh helps older and vulnerable people to stay independent, comfortable, safe and secure in their own homes for as long as they want to and can.
- An ability to address key/difficult issues in safeguarding the above
- A clear link with Edinburgh – the community within which we offer our services.
Candidates will bring:
- The ability to contribute to the positive reputation and awareness of CRE acting as a positive ambassador and spokesperson.
- Excellent inter-personal skills.
- The ability to build strong and constructive relationships to bring positive challenge and strong leadership to the Board.
- An understanding of third sector governance and the role of the Board in ensuring effective strategic direction and support.
- Experience of strategic leadership.
- We also welcome candidates who do have not experience of Chairing a Board. Full induction and training will be provided.
